Welcome to this class on religious and spiritual relics—objects that carry deep meaning, power, and presence in both organized religion and spiritual practice. From the bones of saints sealed in cathedrals to hand-carved talismans used in pagan rituals, relics have long served as bridges between the physical and the sacred.
This course explores what relics are, how they’re made, and why they matter. We'll trace their roots across various traditions—Christianity, Buddhism, paganism, witchcraft, and more—examining how different cultures attribute spiritual significance to physical objects. You'll learn how relics are used: for healing, protection, divination, remembrance, or worship. Some are fragments of a revered person, others are crafted with intention, infused with symbolism, ritual, or natural energy.
We’ll also delve into the historical context: how relics shaped religious identity, crossed borders, and even sparked conflict. In more personal traditions, such as modern witchcraft or folk magic, we can see how relics are created with a purpose through ritual, material selection, and ancestral connection.
